It's a huge city with 7 million inhabitants, and its boroughs and districts have their own distinct characters. City of London - Steeped in history and with its own unique local governance, the square mile is the home of London's traditional financial and banking industry. Throbbing with workers all week and much quieter at the weekends, and plenty of historic sites on your doorstep. Public transport connections are very good.

Mayfair - Famously upmarket nowadays, but before gentrification, this was where a raucus, bawdy fortnightly fair took place every year. Fabulous townhouses, designer boutique shopping and the whiff of old money are the hallmarks of Mayfair.

Pimlico - It's closeness to the houses of Parliament make this the preferred choice of much of the political class. You will find grand houses and grander squares. This is actually our tip for New Year's Eve if you want somewhere within walking distance of the river and fireworks but that is otherwise nice and quiet.

Chelsea - If fashion shopping is your thing, the world famous King's Road in Chelsea will be right up your street.

Canary Wharf - The new financial district to rival the City of London has sprung up in East London with a Manhatten style skyline. You will find impressive buildings, a sense of modernity and newness and good transport links into the rest of London using the DLR and Jubilee Line.

Bayswater - A cosmopolitan part of Westminster with a notable arab population - very close to the huge Hyde Park.

Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs has been a huge success story, and now rivals the City of London as being the UK's financial centre.

I saw today on the news the unveiling of the new retractable roof on centre court at Wimbledon. This development means that important matches will be able to take place even if its raining. I suppose this year people will be praying that the rain comes just so we can see it in action (although since there's only one court with a roof, it would be bad news for the others).

Anyway, the annual celebration of tennis got me wondering if there are any serviced apartments in Wimbledon. Well, as it turns out, there aren't. Not in our listings anyway, which is a shame because a serviced apartment in SW9 could be just the thing to enjoy the tennis fortnight.

It's time again for the Snooker World Championships, as Ronnie the Rocket and other leading snooker players assemble in Sheffield. There's something very special about the Snooker World Championships, and there's been some incredible moments of drama over the years. It's a crying shame that Jimmy White never managed it - especially after he came close so many times - but he'll always be the People's Champion. This year we also pause to remember David Vine, who was for many years the face of snooker, and who sadly died not long ago.

I stayed at a serviced apartment in Liverpool once and the owner had left a bottle of wine and two wine glasses on the dining table, along with a binder full of useful local information and suggestions on things to see and do in the area. It was that extra touch that made the visit all the more enjoyable.

A consequence of the plummeting value of the British pound, is that it costs an arm and a leg to buy foreign currency such as USD or the Euro. This means that hard pressed families will find it increasingly hard to afford city breaks in previously popular destinations such as Paris or Rome.

So if travelling abroad is out of the equation, how about a short stop in some of the UK's finest destinations. Take Reading for example. I only went for the first time recently and was really impressed. Every shop you could hope to find and sometimes two of them.
