The tectonic plates have most certainly shifted in the political world in 2010, so this year’s Party Conferences should be especially interesting. With the emergence of a new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition, many observers will be looking at their conferences for any signs of cracks in the new arrangement.
If you are attending one of the conferences, consider a serviced apartment for your accommodation requirements. They offer more space and privacy than hotel rooms and are great value for group delegations too.
The move away from the seaside destinations of old is complete with all three parties opting to cast aside previously popular venues such as Brighton, Blackpool and Bournemouth.
The Tories will be heading to Birmingham for their get-together and will no doubt have a spring in their step as they are addressed by the first Conservative Prime Minister since John Major’s 1996 Conference speech. Their coalition partners, the Lib Dems, will be in Liverpool, whilst Labour will have the Red Flag flying in Manchester. Their conference will also see the annoucement of their new party leader.

With a population of over one million, Surrey has a reputation as being a “stockbroker belt” for London, and indeed the county’s towns are homes to some of the grandest properties in the Home Counties.
The county town of Surrey is Guildford. Guildford is an attractive town with a population of over 66,000. It offers visitors a wide ranges of shops and culture, and has been chosen as a UK base by major companies such as Vodafone, Mitsubushi an Electronic Arts. The Anglican Guildford Cathedral was consecrated in 1961. Users of public transport will find regular train services available into London Waterloo and drivers will find the town’s location by the A3 to be very convenient

Camberley is in Surrey but close to the borders of Berkshire and Hampshire. Camberley Theatre in the town centre is a good place to check out live music, comedy, touring shows and even wrestling. Camberley’s town centre had one of the few remaining Army & Navy department stores but this was recently rebranded to House of Fraser.

An interesting bit of trivia is that the County Hall for Surrey, where many decisions get taken that effect the county, is not actually in Surrey but in Kingston upon Thames. Kingston was once the county town of Surrey but has for some time now been a London Borough. Whilst not technically Surrey any longer, Kingston is still identified as being part of the county by many and is a great place to visit thanks to its superb town centre which includes the Bentalls Centre and the Bentalls department store.
